The Ruins of Dunalastair.

Dunalastair (meaning Fort of Alexander) House is a Baronial style mansion located in the southern part of the Scottish Highlands, in the County of Perth.

Designed by Andrew Heiton & Son, this building dates back to 1852. It consists of a central tower, in which the main entrance is located, and extended wings on the sides of the tower.

It was originally built for Robertson family, part of Donnachaidh Clan. However, this house has seen many owners throughout its history. In 1853 it was sold to Sir John Macdonald of Dalchosnie, who completely demolished the old house and built the one we see today as a ruin.  The house was sold again to another owner in 1881, and in 1991 the great grandfather of the present owner bought it. The house has served different purposes during its existence, even being turned into a Polish school for boys and later for girls after World War II.

Today, the building stands in a decaying view, after suffering various damages from thieves and vandals. However, there are ideas and desires to reconstruct the mansion, due to its beautiful architecture and rich history. It’s important to note that you cannot access the main road to the house by a vehicle, as it is privately owned.

There is something about it, it is just so beautiful and could easily be something from a fairy tale. I have been meaning to visit for years, and after a fail at Sunnyside I made the 50+ mile drive over here. I am glad I set off when I did, caught it just before the sun started setting.
